Green Goblin - Passing Place
The long awaited debut album from Green Goblin is finally with us. It has been a long time in the making and it has finally been released! Its so hard to put this music into a single style or genre and really does hit you from all angles. It combines a wide range of styles including Bluegrass, Rock, Jazz, Traditional and Country as is simply music written by guys who listen to a diverse range of artists.
Banjo Player with the band Steve McCluskey tells us "We never really consciously thought about what style each song on the album should be. Jim and I have been writing together for years and we just wanted to put something down that we felt was an honest reflection and interpretation of the kind of music we like to play and listen too. We can be listening to Metallica one minute then stick on some Herbie Hancock the next and being brought up in Glasgow and surrounding areas we have been exposed to such a wide variety of material and artists. What was really cool was to have some of our hero's play on this album. Thats been a big deal and when they put their parts down I knew it would be good...Just didn't expect it to be that good!"
Singer and Guitarist with the band adds to this "Having the American guys perform on our album means so much to us as a band because they so so highly regarded and accomplished musicians. When you are a relatively unknown and no one has really heard your stuff, to have guys like that put there name to it makes you realise where your at and helps boost your continuously wavering confidence. Steven put me onto the artists a few years back but he has been a life long fan. Having them play on our album is a dream come true for him, but one we've all come to share. For me as a songwriter and having written Free To Breathe ( John Reischman/mandolin) and Making Bad Love Feel Good, (Rob Ickes/dobro) I had always envisaged the sound of these instruments in my head, particularly free to breathe, and was ecstatic when John, who after receiving our demo, said that he would be happy playing on any of the tracks but would prefer to play on free to breathe. That meant allot to me as he was obviously hearing the song in the same way as I do. There was never any doubt though that rob Ickes and David Grier should play on making bad love feel good and roll'n'rock. The slide sound of the dobro was perfect for bad love, and when I heard what Rob had put down, I new he understood the song perfectly. It was beautifully dirty! It was only fitting that one of Steve's biggest influences should play on an instrumental that he had written himself. David managed to take an already epic rock tune and send it off the dial, without letting it loose any of it's subtleties. Thomas the drummer, and keen guitar player, has been a follower of bluegrass and country music all his life and was more than familiar with our friends from across the water. Our bassist Jason Wotherspoon almost fainted when he heard that Dave pomeroy was going to be recording some of our stuff in the US with double Grammy winner Rob Ickes. Dave Pomeroy has played bass on more than 500 albums, including work with Elton John, Keith Whitley, Trisha Yearwood, Earl Scruggs, Willie Nelson, Alan Jackson, Emmylou Harris and The Chieftains. I think his exact words were, " Oh f**k! He's gonnae hear ma bass.", "Better make it good!" was the response. Jason had been learning from Dave for years as he is a featured columnist for Bass Player Magazine. Dave also has one of the biggest record labels in Nashville, so it's great to have such a good working relationship with these guys. They've said they would love to work with us again in the future and mentioned touring over here enlisting our help as support. I'm sure a place to stay was even discussed. The engineer we worked with, with David Grier, Brent Truitt is also extremely accomplished, having toured with the Dixie Chicks and Alison Krauss. But the real star of the show was our very own Dr Bone and Jamie Graham from the washoose studio. Their input was paramount".
All in all its a truly original and progressive album from a band that are definitely going places!
